Part 11

Part 11, by Kathryn

Dot stirred.
What had awoken her? She yawned and looked across the tent. Herbert lay on his striped mat, sound asleep.
She shrugged her weary shoulders and lay down on the hard mat once more. All of the sudden, a low, rumbling noise could be heard. It grew louder, and fiercer, until the very dirt beneath her shook.
"Herbert!" she cried. He jerked awake. Dot crawled across the dirt floor to his side. He put his loving arms around her, as she shook in fear.
The tent rocked dangerously. Dot wanted to scream as she could hear exploding noises in the distance. Things crashed in the small camp. Someone screamed.
Then all of the sudden, it stopped. All was quiet. A deathly quiet. It was as if it had never happened, and Dot and Herbert were still taking their peaceful naps to the sound of the relaxing jungle. As they sat in shock, the tent flap opened, and Madison burst through.
"Thank goodness you're alright," she exclaimed. "Come on, don't just sit there! Hurry!" She ran away.
"What?" Herbert asked. "What's going on? What was that?" They ran after her.
Dot gasped at the sight of the camp. Things were broken and lay scattered from the violent shaking. Herbert stopped a native that hurried by.
"What happened?"
"It was volcano! She is going to explode! We must leave island at once!"
"Oh Herbert, I'm so scared!" Dot sobbed.
